The Chief, Podiatry Section, Procedure/Specialty Clinic will establish, monitor and evaluate the overall delivery of Podiatry Section, as follows:
Establish effective operational policies, procedures, methods, and work schedules to maintain access to timely care consistent with VHA goals. Direct the planning and coordination of Podiatry clinics area, and with other Service Lines of the Medical Center to ensure that the patients' total care needs are met and that the standard of clinical care provided meets or exceeds community standards. Develop business plans and workload analysis to support staffing models for additional personnel resources Work with other attending practitioners, students, and members of the team to facilitate a comprehensive and interdisciplinary team approach, reflecting the highest level of patient care:
interpret and maintain the standards published by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Joint Commission standards for Podiatry procedures; and evaluate the quality of appropriateness of care as an integral part of the overall Medical Center quality management program. This includes participation in medical center meetings that directly involve the Podiatry section. Ensure that the members of the staff are appropriately qualified, properly licensed, clinically privileged and have their scope of practice and/or privileges delineated. Periodically review physicians' privileges; make recommendations for appointment and reappointment; manage clinical privileges for each member of the service including new appointees. Ensure that the individuals with clinical privileges provide competent care within their scope of privileges granted. Perform competency evaluations of non-practitioner and practitioner members who provide direct patient care services within the section. This includes all categories of practitioners i.e. staff, contract, fee basis, intermittent, etc. Fully complete focused and ongoing professional practice evaluations (OPPE). Monitor, coordinate, facilitate and document training of health care professionals working in the Podiatry section. May include direct supervision of staff members within team or students. Ensure that VA James E. Van Zandt Medical Center, medical record documentation standards are met for all patients, both inpatient and outpatient clinics, in a timely fashion in accordance with business rules for consult management. Ensure continuous physician coverage through collaboration and coordination with other clinical services and/or the academic affiliate. Serve as a member of the organized medical staff and function within the Medical Staff Bylaws and other rules and regulations of the Veterans Health Administration and the VA James E. Van Zandt Medical Center. This includes assignment of tours of duty for non-practitioner and practitioner members, recommending how practitioners allocate their time among research, administration, education and patient care; participation in committees as assigned by the Chief of service Ensure that all new and current non-practitioner, practitioner or other team members are fully oriented to VA James E. Van Zandt Medical Center regulations for timekeeping for part time, fee basis, and fulltime practitioners. This includes monitoring the time and attendance of part-time practitioners and ensuring education and compliance with Medical Center policies. Support medical equipment procurements and provide decision support for equipment and supply management in the Podiatry section to minimize excessive inventory and to minimize waste of resources. Ensure a safe environment for patients and employees by reviewing and evaluating incident and patient injury reports; identifying hazards to health and safety; making relevant recommendations to Chief of service and administration. Maintain effective liaison relationships with educational affiliates and referring facilities. Oversee Podiatry-specific time utilization to include appropriate prioritization of cases among all practitioners in Podiatry, manage prospective waiting times for procedures, and assure completion of practitioner documentation. Manage clinic utilization and practitioner/patient staffing; oversee clinical access clinics or other strategies such as evening and weekend clinic availability Coordinate assessment of patient complaints and service recovery efforts as well as coordination of Medical Advisory Opinions as needed. Work Schedule:
Tour of duty is varying daylight hours, Monday through Friday; however, weekend and evening hours may occur when Veteran needs arise. Financial Disclosure Report:

United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of Doctor of Podiatric Medicine, or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in podiatric medicine and surgery. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The podiatrist must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Specific Requirements:
Outstanding professional ability in the practice of medicine or a medical specialty; Ability to guide the development and implementation of programs, within their respective domain. These programs would include, but are not limited to, medical practice, professional standards, personnel issues, and quality and performance improvement. Preferred
Experience:
Five (5) years or more as a practicing Podiatrist. Reference:
VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-4 Podiatrist Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements:
Light lifting, under 15 pounds; Light carrying, under 15 pounds; Use of fingers; Standing 6 hours; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Working closely with others.
