Associate Chief Nurse (ACNS) Outpatient Services

The Associate Chief Nurse (ACNS) for Outpatient Primary Care, Specialty, Ambulatory Surgery, and Chemotherapy/Infusion Clinics is accountable for the administrative and clinical practice oversight, coordination and leadership in clinics and programming. The responsibilities include representation on Medical Center and Service Line committees and groups, which entails the involvement in the planning, evaluation, implementation of care delivery and programming and the orchestration of change and improvements related to nursing practice and patient care. This leadership position is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for populations, groups and programs that cross services and disciplines that influence the organizational mission, and impact health care and outcomes of care. The ACNS for Outpatient Primary Care, Specialty, Ambulatory Surgery, and Chemotherapy/Infusion Clinics collaborates with others across the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center to ensure safe quality patient care that entails the management and forecasting of resource needs, responding to changes in the needs of the patient population and health care climate and influencing organizational mission and strategic direction. The ACNS for Outpatient Primary Care, Specialty, Ambulatory Surgery, and Chemotherapy/Infusion Clinics has responsibility to the patient, the nursing profession and the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center. The Associate Chief Nurse is organizationally aligned under the Associate Director for Patient Care Service, but works closely with the Chiefs of Primary and Specialty Care and Surgery in maintaining standards of professional nursing practice. Regardless of the organizational structure, the ACNS is accountable to the Associate Director for Patient Care Service for the scope of nursing practice based on licensure, staffing levels, professional standards, credentialing and privileging, and functions within the established framework of national and local nursing strategic plan and initiatives. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates:
Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience. Reference:

This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires a combination of walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, pulling, and pushing with potentially long periods of sitting. Transferring patients and objects may occasionally be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to dress in protective clothing in isolation situations or during patient procedures and care. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. Use of fingers, both hands, and near and far vision is required.
