The James E. Van Zandt VAMC is an integrated healthcare system comprised of one hospital in Altoona, PA and 5 community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) within our 14 catchment counties. The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS) Acupuncturist provides examination, diagnosis, treatment, and management of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions. Acupuncturist are state licensed providers who work as part of VA interdisciplinary teams including physical medicine and rehabilitation, primary care, pain management, whole health, other relevant medical and surgical specialties, and other relevant associated health disciplines. The PM&RS Acupuncturist provides care at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center Altoona Campus, as well as at the Community Based Outpatient Clinics, along with providing care and services in the outpatient, inpatient, and community living center settings. The PM&RS Acupuncturist will work collaboratively with various other therapeutic modalities. These modalities may include, but not limited to, chiropractic care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, yoga, and tai chi. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services supports the national Whole Health Initiative Program, which includes alternative medicine services within the acupuncture position. The incumbent reports to the PM&RS Supervisor. Direction and leadership is provided by the Chief of PM&RS with general oversight provided by the PM&RS Supervisor. The acupuncturist is responsible for being self-directed in the delivery of patient care. Acupuncturists at the GS-11 level review and triage acupuncture referrals. The incumbent serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team providing acupuncture treatment as well as further coordination of care for patients referred for acupuncture services. The acupuncturist analyzes medical histories and physical findings to formulate a differential diagnosis based on oriental and western medicine paradigms. Duties include the design and oversight of acupuncture treatment plans as well as a full range of acupuncture services, monitoring the accuracy of needle placement during a treatment. The incumbent communicates with patients about any abnormal or unexpected results or responses to treatment and advises patients regarding lifestyle changes including nutrition, exercise, sleeping habits, stress management, mind body techniques and other matters related to acupuncture care. The acupuncturist may submit referrals and requests for devices, materials and appliances available and commonly used by the acupuncture profession. Duties include documentation of information related to patient care including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, response to treatment, plan of care, and patient education as well as identification and documentation of appropriate coding for each patient encounter. The acupuncturist provides information regarding the patient consultation to other health care providers. The incumbent manages clinical workload demands. The incumbent serves as a mentor to new staff or less experienced staff and students. Work Schedule:

Master's degree in acupuncture or oriental medicine from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM); OR advanced level degree in acupuncture or oriental medicine from a program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM). Certification:
Acupuncturists hired in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) must be board certified through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). The board certification must be current and the acupuncturist must abide by the certifying body's requirements for continuing education. Licensure:
Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice acupuncture in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e.Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia. The board certification must be current and maintained and the acupuncturist much abide by the certifying body's requirements for continuing education. Grade Determinations for GS-11:
In addition to meeting the above requirements, you must meet one of the following:
Experience:
At GS-11, the full performance level, candidates must possess one year of creditable experience that is equivalent to the GS-9 in the Federal service (or equivalent). Individuals at this grade level GS-9 are considered to be entry level and are closely supervised. The employee works under the direction of a journey level or higher acupuncturist or other health care providers licensed to perform acupuncture. The acupuncturist provides professional services in accordance with the established treatment plan. Deviations from regular procedures, unanticipated problems, and unfamiliar situations are referred to more experienced staff for a decision or assistance. OR Education:
Doctoral degree or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university in an acupuncture or oriental medicine. Experience is only creditable if it is obtained following graduation of master's degree or doctoral degree in Acupuncture or Oriental Medicine from an accredited training program. Experience must be post-master's degree or above. Creditable experience must include work as a professional licensed acupuncturist. Preferred
Experience:
Candidates will have at least one year of direct experience within the VHA Health System providing Acupuncture evaluation and treatment, including (but not limited to) direct care of Outpatients, acute and sub-acute inpatients, and CLC residents. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11, so the candidate salary will be in the GS-11 range. Physical Requirements:
